Cancelling your Microsoft 365 (formerly Office 365) subscription in the UK stops future charges but allows you to keep using the apps and services until the end of your current billing period. Understanding what happens to your files and applications after cancellation is important before you proceed.

⚠️ Refund Warning for Annual Subscribers

  • If you pay annually: Cancelling mid-term stops the next annual charge, but you do not receive a refund for any remaining months. You keep full access until the annual subscription end date.
  • If you pay monthly: You can cancel any time without penalty. Access continues to the end of your current monthly billing cycle.

How to Cancel via Your Microsoft Account

  1. Go to account.microsoft.com and sign in.
  2. Click on Services & subscriptions.
  3. Find your Microsoft 365 subscription and click Manage.
  4. Click Cancel subscription or Turn off recurring billing.
  5. Follow the prompts to confirm. You will receive a confirmation email.

What Happens After You Cancel

OneDrive storage

Your OneDrive storage drops from 1TB to the free 5GB tier. If your files exceed 5GB, you cannot upload new files. Your existing files are not deleted immediately but become inaccessible until you free up space or resubscribe.

Office applications

Word, Excel, PowerPoint and other desktop apps enter a read-only mode. You can view and print documents, but editing and creating new files is disabled until a paid subscription is active again.

Family plan

Cancelling a Microsoft 365 Family plan removes the premium benefits — extra OneDrive storage and full Office apps — for all members when the subscription expires.

Managing software subscriptions is a key part of modern budgeting. Track all your subscriptions with Sub-Site — from Microsoft to Adobe, privately, with no login required.
